Doctoral PhD Position in Geophysics with Focus on Earthquake Rupture Dynamics, Sweden

Study Subject:Geophysics
Employer:Uppsala University
Level:PhD
Scholarship Description:The focus of this Ph.D. project is on the exploration of how the geometrical complexity of faults, in the form of branches and bends, control the rupture dynamics in a heterogeneous media. Using 3D Finite Element Modeling, the Ph.D. candidate will study the propagation and termination of rupture on a preexisting fault (with bends and branches) for different geometries and varying material properties. The models developed will be tested against standard source models of recent large earthquakes. This study is a joint project in collaboration with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University.

We are seeking a motivated candidate where a strong background in mathematics, physics or geophysics is desirable. Experience in programming and finite element modeling is a merit. The PhD positions are for 4 years where financing for the first year may be by a study grant (utbildningsbidrag) and the following 3 years as an employee of the university as a PhD student. If funds are available, it is possible to extend the PhD study period to maximum 5 years by working as a teaching/research assistant (max 20%). Uppsala University is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women to apply for this position.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 March 2011
