The Doctoral PhD project involves writing a dissertation on the following topic: ‘Human Rights and Human Duties: Assessing the Obligations entailed in Human Rights’.

You have an MA in Philosophy and/ or Law with a clear interest in a philosophical and conceptual approach to legal questions. Furthermore you should have excellent analytical and writing skills in English and Dutch. You have teaching skills or are willing to obtain these skills.The Doctoral PhD initial contract will be for one and a half years, which then will be renewed if the progress made under this first contract is satisfactory. An employment of 0,8 FTE is negotiable. Commencement date: 1 July (at the latest).

The Doctoral PhD research aims at the following objectives:
1. Analysing the conceptual link between human rights and human duties.
2. Developing a normative theory of human duties.
3. Proposing practical guidelines for the assessment of the legal implications of human duties.

Alongside the Doctoral PhD research, the candidate is required to make a small contribution to the teaching of the Philosophy of Law department in the Bachelor of Law programme of the Faculty of Law.

Doctoral PhD Position in Geophysics with Focus on Earthquake Rupture Dynamics, Sweden

Scholarship Description:The focus of this Ph.D. project is on the exploration of how the geometrical complexity of faults, in the form of branches and bends, control the rupture dynamics in a heterogeneous media. Using 3D Finite Element Modeling, the Ph.D. candidate will study the propagation and termination of rupture on a preexisting fault (with bends and branches) for different geometries and varying material properties. The models developed will be tested against standard source models of recent large earthquakes. This study is a joint project in collaboration with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University.

We are seeking a motivated candidate where a strong background in mathematics, physics or geophysics is desirable. Experience in programming and finite element modeling is a merit. The PhD positions are for 4 years where financing for the first year may be by a study grant (utbildningsbidrag) and the following 3 years as an employee of the university as a PhD student. If funds are available, it is possible to extend the PhD study period to maximum 5 years by working as a teaching/research assistant (max 20%). Project description

Priority Research Centre for Health Behaviour PhD Scholarship



Scholarship Description

The PhD work is associated with an NHMRC funded trial aimed at improving diabetes care in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations. The work is in collaboration with Baker IDI. It will involve working with a number of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs). The PhD component of the work will be primarily based in Newcastle and could include an exploration of: • variations in diabetes screening and care, • ACCHO staff views about methods for improving diabetes screening and care • barriers to and triggers for change in ACCHO health care practices. There will be opportunity for the PhD scholar to develop and shape the research agenda in association with the PhD supervisors. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant may be required to complete cultural competency training.
